Pride Month - A Message from Anthony

Anthony shares his message about Pride Month, and his experiences as a gay man in the United States Army.

This Pride Month, I reflect on my experiences being an openly gay man in the United States Army. I think about how fortunate I was that I could be my most authentic self, love openly and unconditionally, and have a military career that progressed without fear of blatant discrimination.

The Army didn’t use to be that place. Many people before me, leaders and subordinates alike, used to hide their sexuality in fear. In the age of “Don’t ask, don’t tell,” which only ended during the Obama Administration, our service members were told they couldn’t love freely even though they were fighting for our Nation’s freedom. Through their strength, determination, and ability to persevere through adversity that changed the Army for the better. It was them that fostered the change for Soldiers like me, and our future Soldiers to come. I thank them this Pride month and every single day of my life, just as I do for every single LGBTQ+ individual that fought the fight for equality from the start and ignited a movement that has brought us here today.

Though, same as in the Army, there is still more work to be done; many people in our community still experience discrimination in one form or another, especially our PoC and trans brothers, sisters, and non-binary family. It is our duty to continue this honorable fight until our future generations no longer have to. So, take this time to celebrate your Pride; take this time to celebrate your truth; and most importantly, take this time to be a beacon for those who still are fighting their own battle. You may not be able to change the entire world in an instant, but you can instantly change someone’s world by being there.
